Palestine Cup 2009 (Women)

On a wet and windy day in Aldershot both the RLC and REME were keen to don boots and strips, and prepare for the first fixture in the Merit League and the 60th Anniversary of the Palestine Cup.

On previous occasions the fixture between these two teams as always been a close fought battle and tensions in both squads were running high.

At the blow of the referees whistle both teams were rampant for their first try.  Excellent play from the REME forwards saw Cpl Rosie Haigh breaking through the RLC defence resulting in the REME scoring the first try.

Both teams showed strong defence and solid running in the early stages of the game, but the RLC broke the REME pack with some first class play by Cpl Sarah Mitchelson and it was try time for LCpl Jojo Joubert.

The hard – hitting and excellent running continued from the RLC forwards and backs, resulting in LCpl Sam Crake scoring the RLC second try.  The pace of the game became more frenetic with both teams pushing for more points.  At the half time whistle it was 10 -5 in favour of the RLC.

Cpl Rosie Haigh must have given the REME team a wake up call because they came out fighting, some initiative play from the REME pack broke the RLC defence to make it level at 10 -10.

A pair of fresh legs and lungs in the form of LCpl Bani (RLC) changed the tempo of the game later in the second half.  LCpl Bani doubled the tally with her moments of magic and some outstanding play from the RLC backs in the form of Cpl Sarah Hudson, Capt Emilie Astley – Arlington and LCpl Sam Crake.  The RLC were victorious in a hard fought game that could have gone either way.

RLC 20 – 10 REME
