RLC RUFC Inter Unit Tournament -The Williamson Trophy



The 2017 Williamson Trophy (WT 17) tournament will be held at Chippenham RFC  on Wed 6 Sep 17.  The event will commence at 0930hrs  and end at approximately 1630hrs.  It is open to all RLC units with composite RLC teams from Headquarters or organisations also encouraged to enter (e.g. HQ Army or DE&S) and will be in the form of a men's 15-a-side tournament.

The day will also serve to host the annual Unit Rugby Officers Briefing at 1145hrs in Chippenham Rugby Club House in order that the Chairman of RLC RUFC can engage with the Corp’s Rugby Representatives in an appropriate environment.

Finally, this event will also act as a Corps Squad selection event.  Players selected to play for the Corps will represent the RLC at the Inter Corps Festival of Rugby on 13 Sep 17.  This is likely to include any player who has represented the Corps in the past two seasons and any new talent identified on the day.

It is hoped that units will fully support this tournament with an ethos of; “bigger is better”.  The competition is open to all Regular and Reserve RLC units.  There is no entry fee and entries, Williamson Trophy Entry Form are to be completed and returned to the RLC RUFC Sectary by NLT Thu 24 Aug 17 in order to allow adequate time to generate the day’s fixture format.

Any units or individuals that wish to be considered for affiliation/amalgamation are to submit their requests by email to the RLC RUFC Sectary  NLT 20 Aug 17.  All teams entering must have RFU insurance that has been arranged by affiliating to the ARU for the season 2017/18.


Reporting- Team captains/managers are to report to the RLC Rugby gazebo, adjacent to the pitch by 0930hrs on Wed 6 Sep 17 and hand in a completed Williamson Trophy Match Certificate.  A briefing will be given on the competition thereafter.

Format-  The competition will be a 15-a-side tournament for men.  The exact format of the competition will be decided by the RLC RUFC Sectary once all entries have been received.  However, the top two male teams will compete in the final for the Williamson Trophy, with the lower men’s places competing for the Chris Cox Memorial Plate.  Outline timings for the day are:

a. Team captains’ brief 0930hrs.

b. First game to kick off at 0945hrs.

c. Lunch 1200hrs - 1300hrs.

d. The tournament will conclude at approximately 1630hrs, with prize giving immediately thereafter.

Players-  As this competition also acts as the pre-season Corps selection, units are encouraged to bring as many players as possible.  The RLC RUFC Senior XV Team Manager is requested to contact all Corps players not in formed units with a view to them attending the competition.

Officials-  The ARU Match Officials Co-ordinator is requested to provide enough qualified Officials to run 2 x concurrent matches from 0945-1600hrs. 

Presentations- The RLC RUFC Treasurer is requested to recover both the Williamson Trophy and Chris Cox Memorial Plate and ensure they are polished and up to date for engraving.  The presentations will be awarded by the RLC RUFC Chairman at the RLC Rugby gazebo in the following order:

a. Match officials will receive an individual memento (plan on up to 6).

b. The Plate winning Captain will receive the Chris Cox Memorial Plate .

c. The Williamson Trophy winning Captain will receive the Williamson Trophy.

d. The Player of the Tournament  will receive an individual memento (small trophy).

e. Chippenham RUFC will be presented with a Corps Plaque.

Feeding-  All units are to bring their own packed lunches.  Squash, Tea and Coffee will be provided by Chippenham RFC in their Club House.

Medical Cover- The Senior XV Team Manager is requested to provide contract med cover for the duration of the tournament .  All Teams are required to bring an RFU scaled medical bag to the competition and if available, a physio.  In the event of a significant injury the patient is not to be moved, they are to be kept warm and the emergency services called on ‘999’.

Risk Assessment- The Senior XV Team Manager is to ensure that a risk assessment is conducted in accordance with JSP 375, leaflets 11 and 23.  A copy is to be filed on the RLC RUFC MOSS site.

Unit Rugby Officers’ Briefing

It is intended to hold a Unit Rugby Officers’ Briefing at 1145hrs in a function room within the Chippenham RFC Clubhouse. It will lead directly into lunch followed by further rugby matches from 1300hrs.

Adjts are requested to liaise with Unit Rugby Offrs and confirm unit attendance at this brief with the RLC RUFC Sectary NLT Thu 24 Aug 17.


This event typically sets the tone for the season thus maximum effort is required by all units to get teams to the tournament and Corps Squad training event.  Any queries are to be directed to the RLC RUFC Sectary at the earliest opportunity.
