RLC 1st XV Squad 2017/18 Crowned Inter Corps Champions 2017/18
On an icy and bitterly cold 28 Feb the RLC travelled toAldershot in search of one more win against the Royal Artillery that would seethe Senior XV crowned as Corps Champions. Sadly the Vets Vs RE Vets and RLCWomen Vs AGC Women’s matches did not survive their pitch inspections so werecancelled. The match started with the RLC defending into the wind which made itvery difficult to clear their lines and the Artillery seized on this withclever kicking. The first half was a really tight affair, the Artillery appliedrelentless pressure but the RLC defence was outstanding and matched everythingthat was thrown at them. It was evident that the weather and conditions weregoing to have a factor on the result has the match stayed at 0-0 for themajority of the first half. Just before half time the Artillery snuck into thelead with a penalty and went into the break 3-0 up.
The second half proved to be a more even contest, both teamsstriving hard to get the crucial first try. A troublesome spell after half timesaw the RLC drop to 13 men at one stage with two players in the sin-bin –however they continued their defensive form from the first half and stood firmagainst the Artillery’s best efforts. Once back up to the full complement, theRLC used a series of penalties and driving mauls to inch themselves down thetouchline. After a period of sustained pressure on the Artillery’s line, scrumhalf Iggy Putty dived over the line from close range to score a crucial trylate on. With the critical conversion added the Artillery knew they needed toscore a try, however the RLC stood firm to see out the game and deservedly takethe trophy. The win capped a brilliant season for the team, remaining unbeatenand winning the Championship.
