ARU Corps Festival of Rugby 2015

The ARU Corps Rugby Festival was held on Wed 16 Sep 15 at Aldershot to open the 2015/16 Corps season. With the AGC unable to field a side in the Merit League 1, the RLC stepped up their 1st XV to take on the challenge, while providing a Saxons X’s team to play in Merit League 2 and a Ladies X’s team to play in a round robin tournament.

With the RLC admin team arriving early they were able to secure a prime location adjacent to the Stadium pitch. The ladies arrived a little later and were denied asses to the Stadium by the prowling ARU staff; they sited themselves on Queens Avenue. By 0830 hours the RLC Gazeboes and Briggs flags were up and the place was awash with RLC players all kitted out in ‘Stash’; there was an air of excitement throughout all the players and management.

The opening game in the Stadium saw the Saxons take on the AMS – a ragged encounter with both teams not really adjusting to the 10’s way of playing; the Saxons sorted this issue out in the 2nd half and ran out winners by 26-0 – a good positive start. The 1st XV then took on the RSigs on the Queens Avenue pitch. The RSigs having been on a 3 week training camp started well, however, they were no match for the power of the RLC who ran out winners 19-0. The ladies first game was not as successful as they lost to the REME/RE ladies 15-0.

The 2nd game for both the 1st & Saxons did not go the way the RLC had hoped. The 1st XV took on the RA and having pushed the RA pack around the park the RLC took the lead 5-0. The game was a hard hitting affair and both teams pressed hard. The RA managed to squeeze a try in the corner and the final score was a deserved draw 5-5. A tough encounter, just before lunch, saw the RE achieving the only score by a drop kick penalty giving the RE a 3-0 victory – something that would come back to haunt the RLC at the end of the day. The Saxons lost to the RAC 15-24 & the AAC 20-0. The ladies beat the RSigs 32-5, but then lost to the AGC 20-5.

The weather held until just before lunch, at which point it then went torrential and made playing conditions very tough, especially so early in the season. With the ARU desperately trying to preserve the Stadium pitch in advance of the IDRC, the games were shifted to the external pitches. Under horrendous conditions, the RLC 1st XV took on the Infantry and with the last kick of the game stroked over a 3 point drop goal penalty to win 3-0. The stage was set for the final games of the round robin leagues, with many permutations available for who would move into the final.

Due to sustaining several injuries throughout the day, the REME were forced to pull out, only having 11 fit bodies to field against a now rampant and confident RLC 1st XV. Having had the AMS forced to withdraw under similar circumstances, the precedence of a 20 point walk over had been set for all teams that were still to play the withdrawing team. With this in place, the RLC came up 3 points (on goal difference) short of making the final. The games in the Merit league 1 had been extremely close with very little between the top 4 teams.

Despite the obvious disappointment, the RLC accepted the decision. It had been a great day’s rugby for the RLC. Close to 90 players had the opportunity to take to the field, the ladies and the Saxons did not fair too well, but this is the start of the season and there is a long way to go before the Corps finals in April 2016. As for the 1st XV, having accepted relegation and preparing for a 10’s tournament, they took on the changed direction of travel and set about the task with total dedication, commitment and professionalism – the word buzzing around the other Corps was that the RLC were definitely back, stronger, fitter and certainly more committed.

With the obvious uncertainty over what the AGC might or might not do about meeting match commitments, the 1st XV now moves on with a focus on a good season and a place in the Aldershot Stadium for the finals day of the ARU Corps Season in April 2016.

A great day of rugby.
