On an icy and bitterly cold 28 Feb the RLC travelled to Aldershot in search of one more win against the Royal Artillery that would see the Senior XV crowned as Corps Champions. Sadly the Vets Vs RE Vets and RLC Women Vs AGC Women’s matches did not survive their pitch inspections so were cancelled. The match started with the RLC defending into the wind which made it very difficult to clear their lines and the Artillery seized on this with clever kicking. The first half was a really tight affair, the Artillery applied relentless pressure but the RLC defence was outstanding and matched everything that was thrown at them. It was evident that the weather and conditions were going to have a factor on the result has the match stayed at 0-0 for the majority of the first half. Just before half time the Artillery snuck into the lead with a penalty and went into the break 3-0 up.
The second half proved to be a more even contest, both teams striving hard to get the crucial first try. A troublesome spell after half time saw the RLC drop to 13 men at one stage with two players in the sin-bin – however they continued their defensive form from the first half and stood firm against the Artillery’s best efforts. Once back up to the full complement, the RLC used a series of penalties and driving mauls to inch themselves down the touchline. After a period of sustained pressure on the Artillery’s line, scrum half Iggy Putty dived over the line from close range to score a crucial try late on. With the critical conversion added the Artillery knew they needed to score a try, however the RLC stood firm to see out the game and deservedly take the trophy. The win capped a brilliant season for the team, remaining unbeaten and winning the Championship.
